Yesterday Todd Pletcher and I carried the CFAC flag at the short course meters meet in Charlotte. It was a small meet, but enjoyable.
The day started with us showing up at the pool with what we thought was plenty of time. We overheard Jerry Clark talking to another swimmer in the locker room saying that they planned to combine the 2 heats of the 1500m into a single heat. I walked out onto the pool deck and was told to get on the blocks immediately. I asked a referee for a second and ran back to the locker room to get Pletch. We jumped on the blocks and were off with no warm up. Evidently, Todd needs no warm up - TODD PLETCHER IS NOW THE 40-44 NC RECORD HOLDER IN THE 1500 SCM. He broke the state record of 18:33.42 with a solid 18:27.10. CFAC went 1 and 3 in the 1500 (I passed the 4th place swimmer somewhere in the final couple hundred meters for 3rd overall).
The events came fast and furious and it seemed like we had just enough time to swim down after an event and get ready for our next swim. We each swam 6 events and raced over 2000 meters. This was my first short course meters meet and I really didn't notice the extra distance in the first couple events (except for the slightly slower times). However, by the end of the day, it was obvious that the flags were a little further apart. The 1500 really caught up to me the last two events - the 200 free and 400 free. Converting my time to yards, I swam a pathetic 200 followed by a non-stellar 400 (I was so glad the 400 was the last event of the day, because I didn't know how I was going to get out of the pool for a few minutes). Todd was a lot smarter and took it easier on the 200 and then broke his second state age group record of the day in the 400! Unfortunately, someone else was after the record and Todd was second in the event.
We were on the road before 1pm and looking for a burger and a beer... Not a bad way to spend a Sunday!
Kind Regards,
